The Working Group Public Humanities has been founded!

When this blog was created in 2021, we wanted to test out whether it would be worthwhile to create a working group on Public Humanities (there were a few other names in our minds as well).

Note: This is the English translation (automatically with DeepL). The German original can be found here.

When this blog was created in 2021, we wanted to test out whether it would be worthwhile to create a working group on Public Humanities (there were a few other names in our minds as well). Our first goal was this:

On this blog we would like to describe the research field of Public Humanities in more detail. A blog series on definitions and areas of work is planned. We would like to explore best practices and try out our own formats of science communication.

By now, a good two years have passed. Our blog series found some writers and quite a few readers. Again and again, the idea of transforming the whole thing into a working group germinated in us.

And so we (Mareike and Melanie) decided to finally dare to apply for an working group funding and look for comrades-in-arms aka. founding members. We were a bit overwhelmed by the positive responses and also by the great interest in the working group since its foundation in December 2022. By the way the first meeting is planned for March 2023 at DHd in Presence (or hybrid).

Of course, some preliminary considerations are necessary for the foundation of such an AG. The focal points of our work became clear quite quickly:

We want to deal with issues of scholarly communication and the involvement of a broad public in research projects in the digital humanities (Public Digital Humanities).

However, we do not want to stop at pure theory. We also want to bundle science / humanities communication activities and organize joint actions on digital platforms such as blogs or social media. In addition, we want to create best practices and a handout for digital humanists who want to get into digital science / humanities communication and / or public humanities.

In doing so, we want to address the following specific questions, among others:

  • How can the research public and / or a broader public be involved in digital humanities projects?
  • Which projects are already dedicated to science communication and / or public digital humanities?
  • How can we work together to ensure that the Digital Humanities are strengthened in the public perception?
  • What are best / worst practices in science communication and how can we easily and safely enter this field?
  • What value does scholarly communication add to research or researchers?
  • In the context of this, this blog will also change a bit in its structure and appearance. But more about that soon.

You are interested in science communication in the DH or in public humanities?

You think that sounds interesting? And you want to be part of it? No problem, you can become a member of our DHd-AG at any time. Just drop us a line. Then we will invite you to our Discord server and add you to our mailing list.

You can find more information about the DHd-AG on the DHd page.
